competition guidelines

The Open Sonority International Instrumental Competition is open to pianists, as well as string (violin/viola/cello) and woodwind (flute/oboe/clarinet/bassoon) instrumentalists of all nationalities. Students ages 4 to 18 can participate within their age category.

JURY
Jury members will consist of prominent performers and experienced pedagogues. Jury activity and participation is determined and regulated by the special Jury Protocol.

AWARDS
Prizewinners will receive diplomas and cash prizes.
The decision of the Jury is final and irrevocable.

COMPETITION SCHEDULE
Application deadline: April 11th, 2025.

To apply for the Competition participant must submit:
– completed application form
– payment confirmation
– application fee in the amount of 100 USD per participant.

Competition date: May 3rd, 2025.
Winner’s recital date: May 4th, 2025 at 11 AM.
Location: Kawai Piano Gallery, 5800 Richmond Ave., Houston, TX 77057.

Incomplete applications, including failure to pay application fee, shall not be considered.
Application fee is non-refundable.
The awards ceremony will take place during the winner’s recital.

REPERTOIRE AND CATEGORIES
The program must consist of two pieces of different styles and composers.
If selecting a Sonata/Suite, one movement can be performed.
The repertoire must be played from memory except for woodwind players, they are allowed to use sheet music.

Category A: participants born after January 1st, 2017; time limit – max. 5 min.
Category B: participants born between January 1st, 2014 – December 31st, 2016; time limit – max. 7 min.
Category C: participants born between January 1st, 2011 – December 31st, 2013; time limit – max. 8 min.
Category D: participants born between January 1st, 2007 – December 31st, 2010; time limit – max. 10 min.
Category E: ensembles; time limit – max. 10 min.
